CHEYENNE – State and local leaders will be called on to put kids first when advocates for Wyoming’s children stage the 3rd Annual Step Up for Wyoming Kids week Oct. 2-9 in communities across the state.
Wyoming is one of 27 states throughout the nation that will host nonpartisan events focusing on issues impacting children. The event will call on citizens, mayors, county commissioners, and legislators to commit to make children a top priority in their policy decisions.
“We want our elected leaders at every level to step up for children and make sure our kids are at the head of the list when they consider key budget and program decisions,” said Deanna Frey, executive director of the Wyoming Children’s Action Alliance.
“Public policies affect children in many ways, whether in the quality of our public schools, their access to books at the public library, their ability to get the health care they need, or the justice they find at the courthouse,” Frey noted.
There are 114,321 children under age 18 in Wyoming, about one-fifth of all state residents.

  • Children Living in Poverty (2007) – 14,318
  • Children Not Covered by Health Insurance at Any Time (2007) – 12,000
  • Children with Health Care Covered by Government Assistance (2007) – 37,000
  • Children Reported Abused (2005) – 2,020
  • 2 Year Olds Not Immunized (2006) – 1,910 (29.1%)
  • Child Abuse Deaths (2000-2005) –19
  • 27% of 4th Graders Scored below Basic Reading Levels (2007)

Wyoming can make sure that all its children grow into healthy, productive citizens who make our state and our country a better place for all.
